Making Friends with the Floor
This is an Awakening the Dancer practice for cultivating relationship with an ally that is fundamental for all of us – the floor. The mix is all about Flow and grounding, with a nuance of Yin-Yang in the mapping.
GUIDANCE:
There’s a guided version in the production which will be with you in due course. If you would like some framing and guidance, have a read through this intro before you listen and move.
As always, make sure the floor is safe for moving on, that you can be warm, and that you have everything you need before you begin.
You may well want to begin lying on the floor (face-down is recommended for grounding) with your whole body close to the floor, and let the dance begin with that full contact, moving gradually into rolling. Come to your feet as and when your energy naturally rises with the movement.
Soften
In the beginning part of the practice, see if you can let your body soften into the firm sensation of the floor beneath you. Melt a little, and give your weight into that support: let it hold you. Keep softening until that softening naturally becomes a flow or other gentle movement. Let that flow grow and evolve with the music.
Strengthen
As the music gradually strengthens and the beat comes in, push down on the floor to find a version of that strengthening in your own body. Push down, feel your physicality and use this to connect more intentionally with the floor below. Imagine you’re wearing big boots and a gravity suit (that is heavy but in a way that gives you energy and freedom to move) Turn and roll and play with that experience: explore how your flow can be weighted, earth-connected and released at the same time.
Dance
Then as the music lightens, let your movement rise, staying connected with that physical experience of contact with the floor, and dance! Keep that Dance really connected to an awareness of the holding of the floor.
Complete
At the end let the returning piano and birdsong land you.
Take a moment to just rest in the simple physical experience of being a body on a floor.
Most places, the floor is pretty reliable. And beneath the floor is the Earth, and the Earth is beyond reliable. That’s the only place we can ever begin and end all our dances.
Enjoy.
