The Plymouth Project

a photographic exploration of colonial histories, memory and migration

Navigating between personal stories and collective realities, the project juxtaposes a variety of analogue, digital and archival photography to trace the complex histories and contemporary legacies of European colonialism.

This gallery presents extracts from this work-in-progress, begun in 2021. An initial series was completed last year and I am currently developing a new phase of the project, whilst seeking partners and funding for publication, exhibition and resonant outputs.

In 1908, Pedro Bon de Sousa Pernes came to Plymouth to train with the British navy. In 1562, John Hawkins set off from Plymouth on the first triangular Transatlantic slave-trading voyage.
